Top Reasons to Never Ignore a Dental Crack

Posted on 1/30/2020 by Aghera
Top Reasons to Never Ignore a Dental CrackGetting a crack in your tooth is never fun. Whether it is from chewing something that was too tough for your teeth, grinding your teeth in your sleep, or some other source, a crack can create a lot of pain and inconvenience.

Still, for some reason, far too many of our patients try to ignore a crack and avoid coming to see us until further down the road. If this is you, please understand that you need to have the crack checked out right away. Here's why.

Cracks Can Worsen

To start, if you ignore a dental crack, there is a good chance that it is going to get worse. Your teeth are under a tremendous amount of stress from the everyday use they see, and having a crack means the integrity of the tooth structure is compromised. This can lead to all kinds of trouble, even up to and including a broken tooth. So don't ignore it, because it's only going to get worse as time passes.

Cracks Can Lead to Decay

Another issue to remember is that when you have a crack in a tooth, it allows bacteria to enter in. Inside the crack, where your toothbrush cannot reach, the bacteria will multiply and eventually lead to tooth decay. This situation can be even worse if the crack is large enough to allow in food particles and other such matter. These will start to decay inside the crack, greatly accelerating the rate of tooth decay.

Because of this, it is vital that you have any cracks inspected immediately. If you even think that you might have cracked a tooth, come see us and let us take a look. Maybe it won't be anything worth bothering with, but it's better to be safe than sorry. So, come see us, and we'll help set your mind at ease.
